hypothetically

On a scale from "perfectly ethical" to "criminal fraud", where would you rank "returning a fifty dollar PC adapter that has been used for its one-time data transfer"?
Is the answer different for a college student, grad student, or person in the real world? As an undergrad, I knew people who did that sort of thing as normal operating procedure. I haven't come across the practice since -- except in sit-com plots involving arguments over attempted returns of soiled prom dresses.

Considering that the $50 item actually cost the company $0.05 to make, the criminal fraud fault here falls squarely on the producer. For you, the consumer, to fight back by treating purchase as rental, is perfectly appropriate in my eyes.

Have to disagree. It's clearly unethical. It's just not all that unethical in the grand scheme of things.
